My favorite Bible translation. It's the clearest, purest, most direct translation of the original Hebrew and Aramaic. It really speaks to my heart. I always had trouble reading the KJV (with which I was raised), but the NIV and other "plain English" translations didn't feel right, either. The meaning in this Bible is so crystal...
I post this review with the disclosure that I have not read this book from cover-to-cover, nor do I plan to. For me it is purely a reference.I often mine my book selections from the bibliographies of authors I love and respect, which is the case with this selection. It is a mined treasure from the bibliography of Lon Milo Duquette’s The Chicken Qabalah of Rabbi Lamed Ben Clifford.In the Forward of another one of his books, Accidental Christ, Duquette states, “Unlike some contemporary scholars, I share Dr. Lamsa’s opinion that the Scriptures were not originally written in Greek, but in Aramaic – the language of Jesus – and then transcribed, sometimes inaccurately, into Greek equivalents. The “Lamsa Bible†as it has come to be known, is based on ancient Aramaic texts (known collectively as the Peshitta text) that, to my mind at least, ring much truer in places than the Greek-based versions we have come to know. While I will always have a special fondness for the language and cadences of the King James Version that I grew up with, my determination to be as faithful as possible to the original text has made the Lamsa translation my Bible of choice.â€For this reason, I am also pleased with this Bible.
seems great so far, hard to find it even this cheap though too bad wasn't bit more mainstream lower priced some of these better bibles.. the ones before 1965 are better jesus said. it compared this translation to the king james and this one is way clearer what it is saying! so that's good. it is Aramaic translation into English. that was its original language so that helps it not to have been translated s0 much to have gotten lost in translation maybe
How I wish this version of the Bible had been a part of my religious education years ago. So many things that appear in other translations are made plain in this very important document. This Bible has become my main source of Scripture, now others in my congregation are buying their own copies. While some of the information is very different from the King James Version, as I expected it to be in light of the KJV translators sources, there are places where Lamsa adds touches of Elizabethan flair, such as "thou", which is not needed to convince one that this is a Bible. This translation and the Nag Hammadi Library have added such beautiful understanding into why things were done by Biblical characters in the context of Judaism as it existed then. After receiving this Bible and studying the Nag Hammadi Library as a research companion, I marvel at how much information we have and how little traditional Christianity searches for more detail. For me, Lamsa's translation is a major, positive leap into understanding. If we are to "reason together", then this Book is a major source of reason. Let's come together over this one. This Book is a ten on a one-to-five scale.
I previously had a paperback copy that was a big hard to read due to the binding. I was absolutely amazed to find this hard cover that is rare, and the condition was excellent, and binding made it super easy to read.Highly recommend this seller as well.
The Bible, at least the Old Testament, was written in Aramaic. Reading in in direct translation is wonderful, especially since "history is written by the victors" and this great book has been mistranslated and mangled by following generations.I haven't yet read the New Testament.
My only complaint is that I would like a hardbound version or one with a more heavy duty binding. Lamsa's translation undoes a lot of the terrible theological debates Christians often become entangled in because the wording of most translations simply isn't correct. I've used this version heavily in study since I acquired it. I have perhaps twenty Bibles and this one is a favorite. This is an eye opening work, and it will change the way you ponder the meaning of a large number of verses in scripture. I highly recommend this one for anyone seeking the Truth and looking to get a better understanding of Christ. Thank you Mr. Lamsa for your work.
Honestly, I am very zealous for the word of God, and I feel that this translation could have rendered better. I recomend, and if you know spanish, to get the peshitta in spanish, if you are looking for as close as possible to original peshitta manuscripts. This bible is larger than my NASB study bible, and it have no side notes or commentary. Large print,and heavier than ur average bible.I own over 100 translations in 4 languages, so I spend much of my time comparing scripture. There is nothing wrong with the translation, it could be that I expected more, and feel like its been edited to much (outside of George Lamsa's original translation). Ex. "LORD" instead of "Yahweh" or "God" instead of "Ala'aha" (Aramaic way of saying God). I Recomend it to put it in your library, but for the closes Aramaic experiance, get a hold of it in Spanish.
