I am finally writing my review because I'm frustrated by two extremes of the review spectrum. First you have people reviewing the book that haven't finished the protocols and don't give concrete results for you to base your purchase on and give 5 stars. The other extreme are the total haters who haven't even tried it. They complain that it's not new information, it's not, you can read all kinds of bits and pieces online on multiple blogs, but none of them are doctors, none of them have her background. She literally is connecting the dots and showing you the big picture.Other reviews complain it's still overwhelming, if you already know most of this stuff great, move ahead and just start! If the lingo is too much, you can still skip ahead to the plan. She gives a summary at the end of each protocol with what to eat, what not to eat and which supplements to take. If you don't have money to find a functional medicine doctor, or pay for all kinds of tests, then just grab the dang book, read it and spend the few hundred dollars in supplements. I literally feel worlds better and I'm not even through the final protocol.Negative reviews argue she's just peddling her own supplements, totally not true. In ever single case, she gives you 2-3 different brands that you can choose from. Maybe 25% you can buy from her, but there is always, ALWAYS an alternative brand. She makes nothing if you buy them on Amazon. You aren't cornered into buying her stuff. Yes, sometimes I bought hers because it was just a hair better than the others, but I decided that, not her. I'm calling these reviews what they are- BS! Don't let them deter you, none of them followed the protocol and said it didn't work, they're crying before they even start. Some complain about the formatting: It truly is not the best organized book, but all the answers you need are there. If you have thought about trying the Autoimmune Protocol but it terrifies, because it should, then this is awesome. She starts with some simple eliminations in the liver detox, then by the adrenal you're essentially on Whole 30, and by the gut healing, you are already on AIP. It's a gentle and slow elimination program.I read some reviews that said they felt awful immediately on the liver detox and stopped right away. DON'T! If you google side effects of liver detox, you will find a few places that tell you how you can feel sick, like old stuff you've had in the past resurfaces. So I suddenly had asthma attacks and my husband had his food allergy symptoms and then they immediately disappeared once the detox was done. Don't be fooled and give up, push through, you will be so glad you did.WHY 4 STARS: I am not finished and don't have final answers, and for the following reasons. Here's the middle of the road low-down for all you normal people on the verge of desperation with your health. 4 Stars, not 5. Because she is not a good writer. She is smart, and may have a lot of answers, but she isn't a writer and it shows. Some of the stuff she suggests is confusing. For example, in the liver detox protocol, she says to eliminate sugars but then later tells you to replace coffee with hot lemon water (which dammit really worked when you think you can't live without coffee! try it!) but then suggests adding a touch of maple to it. So now I want to know, do I HAVE to give up all sugars? Can I have just a LITTLE maple? I'm desperate people.Another frustration, you would think with her suggestions of taking a good dose of supplements, that she would give you some sort of suggested schedule. You end up ordering your supplements, then you get them and some say not to take with herbs, others are between meals, others with meals. Yes she tells you how much to take of each every day, but I feel like it would have taken about an hour extra of her work to put together a grid that shows the best way to space out these supplements that can potentially cancel each other out during the liver detox. My advice to you if you want to do this: Read the whole book first, I went through the book as I went through the protocols. I wish I would have read to the end to see the whole picture, and to get to the section for advanced protocols before starting. I only saw after half way, that I could have done the advanced protocols at the same time. I thought you HAD to do the basic and then the advanced in order. That would have been an EXCELLENT tiny note to mention at the beginning. Because I know with how sick I've been that I'd have to do them anyway. Two birds with one stone and not being on a lame diet for as long would have been AWESOME. Buuuuuut whatever. So you learn from my mistake and just read the whole freaking book before you start. Last piece of advice, I highly highly suggest that while you are pre-reading the book, slow down on coffee, maybe half caff for a while, then just caffeinated tea, and then that way it won't be so disturbing when you stop altogether. It really made it more tolerable. Oh! And google detoxing therapeutic baths, take one every day if you can during the liver detox.Which reminds me, A lot of the supplements you buy will be enough for doing this twice, and some you can buy a bigger bottle for a double portion. I would highly highly recommend doing it with a friend/spouse etc. That way you have support and someone to split the cost with.So I think that's all..... I think it's totally worth it. I have finished the liver and the adrenal phase, we are starting the gut healing and I'm pumped. I haven't felt this great in YEARS. I literally sleep better, my skin is better, my moods are better, I don't have anxiety and heart palpitations anymore, my husband is better, I poop! Every day! It's amazing! My stomach isn't bloated anymore, my periods are waaaay better, no more PMS. Please tell me (and my husband lol) that that alone isn't worth it?! No more swelling, no more joint pain, no more headaches, I could sit her for an hour and just keep remembering more and more. The most significant was how braindead and foggy I felt, and depressed. This was my breaking moment and last straw. I was ready to see a psychiatrist and start medication again if this didn't work. And it has. All joking aside, even if I still have to take thyroid medication for the rest of my life, if those symptoms stay away and I got my energy and mental health back, it was worth a few hundred bucks in supplements and eliminating some foods. I will report back with before and after lab numbers when I get retested at the end. I really hope this was helpful and that you just go for it.
I read her first book "Root Cause" and have to say I MUCH PREFER this new book! So if you are deciding between the two, opt for the new one! I can tell that she worked much more closely with an editor because there is far less rambling & repetition. Right now I am about 3/4 the way through the book and have started on the first protocol but have not started feeling "great" yet. The information however is very useful and concise, you know what brand of supplement to order and how much, which is a big improvement IMHO to the first book which was a bit vague. It's a shocker to see just how many supplements are required each day, it is pricey... but so is feeling sick and tired all the time!(Attached photo shows supplements required for 1st protocol)UPDATE #1:Finished the 2 week liver protocol with some success. We are now in 2nd week of 4 week Adrenals protocol.A) I took the thyroid symptom assessment quiz before we started went from a score of around 229 to a 166, now at 83!(lower number means less symptoms)B) In the liver assessment test I went from a "severe" toxicity 50, down to a moderate 23, now an 8!C) Adrenal Assessment I went from a 16 to a 3!D) Also my hubby's blood pressure went down & it's now in the acceptable range.E) I do seem to have more energy and mental clarity the last week and have been losing weight.F) No cravings for sweets, salty foods or coffee. (yay!)I will update again once we finish the 2nd protocol. (added photo of supplements for 2nd protocol)
I've read pretty much everything out there on the subject of Hashimoto's, and I can honestly say without a doubt that this is the #1 resource in existence on the subject.Dr. Wentz has been leading thinker on Hashimoto's for years, and though her book Root Cause was excellent, this book takes things to a whole other level. It's not only much easier to navigate, but also lays out the path to recovery so simply and clearly. The unfortunate reality of our world today is that we are suffering from massive information overload. And there are few places where this is more true than on the subject of hypothyroidism. On the one hand, we have many mainstream conventional physicians who believe that little to nothing can be done for Hashimoto's except to give a prescription for thyroid hormones (which will require ever-increasing dosages as the thyroid gland is progressively destroyed). On the other hand, we have a mess of various people suggesting all sorts of lifestyle and diet interventions that are often not supported by science (for example, one notable thyroid guru who has a large following of people advises to consume large amounts of orange juice, milk, refined sugar, and to avoid omega-3s and green vegetables at all costs. I'm not making this up.)In short, we have a mess of information that has the potential to easily lead people down paths that are ultimately likely to either leave people feeling like there is nothing they can do except pop thyroid pills, or alternatively, sort through a mess of information to figure out how to implement diet and lifestyle changes to benefit their thyroid health.Dr. Wentz has done all the hard work of sifting through this mess of information, and through the scientific research itself. She has also hugely advanced the entire paradigm of how we think about hypothyroidism with her "Safety Theory" -- which by the way, is genius. This book is not just about covering up symptoms -- it's about getting at the root cause of the problem. And Izabella guides step-by-step on exactly how to correct each of the root causes, from her slow and gentle liver support and detox approach, to fixing your adrenals, to healing your gut. It's all laid out in easy-to-follow steps. To sum up: If you have Hashimoto's, get this book right now. It lays out the exact steps you need to take to reverse your symptoms and get your health back. Make it your health bible -- study it and implement it, and you'll be on the path to recovery.-Ari Whitten
