From childhood abuse to Midwest storms, heaven represents many things in the events of Ted's and Anderson's lives. We meet Anderson, the surgeon, while at the beach with his family as a child at the beginning of a tornado. Ted, the artist, flees home while still a child to survive the Christian fervor of his devout parents. When they come together, it is not the difference in upbringing that matters. It is their common loneliness driven by the demands of their crafts and previous failed relationships that draws them together. It is that need to connect that makes them look beyond previous experience to the possibility of their joint lives. As they are creating this new combined life, midway through the story, Ted helps a young man named Josiah who stumbles their way. Josiah and his brother James bring additional color and dimension to When Heaven Strikes.I liked this book and these characters so much. Feeley has written a beautiful love story without undue angst. The tried and true tropes are ignored and instead this is a book of people honestly meeting the challenge of living, the challenge of choosing to build a relationship, choosing to meet their needs. It is wild and dramatic and much like the storms of the Midwest summer setting. At one point, Anderson said, "we are two queers in a straight man's world." Indeed. Much of their loneliness and drive for perfection is defined by that one sentence.The story developed quickly despite the number of off-shoots and threads that fleshed it out. Although Feeley used Christian belief as a setting, it was not overdone or derogatory. It was Ted's experience, Josiah's similar experience, and it fit. Highly recommended.

His love of horror and all things that go bump in the night was today over powered this time to reach out in his anger of the religious teachings of the church for the hatred they preach of the gay community. Me thinks he knows this first hand.Anderson Taylor and Ted Armstrong come from two different life styles. Their meeting was helped by Anderson’s grandmother who brought Ted to her home to have him paint a picture for her home. Anderson was there on the pretext to help her plant some trees.Anderson is a surgeon at the local hospital and had buried his life in his work; having lost a few lovers along the way because of his never having any time. Ted has had a brutal childhood and buries himself in his art.The meeting went well, Eleanor the matriarch has given Ted a retainer to paint her picture and shy, tentative Anderson slips his phone number into Ted’s back pocket as he leaves. Hold your breath!Mr. Feeley has never given us easy and he does not disappoint here when Preacher Jeff and Josiah traveling door to door, knock at Ted’s door opening up a secondary story. So now the reader is brought into not only the growing attraction of Anderson and Ted but into the brutality of what happens when religious bigots come forth.The ‘Storm†descends on this town and you wonder if God himself needed to act as the storm would be reported as ‘an act of God’.The author holds a beautiful line of the interaction of the new lovers, and the suspense of the upcoming Garden Party and the imminent storm; which was genius in its flow.There are even more surprises as the story continues, some you didn’t see coming culminating in a great Epilogue.Loved it! This story had just about every type of editing mistake possible, from typos to incomplete sentences to tense switching. Also, the pages would be filled with purple prose but the character dialogue was always either stiff/stilted or unrealistic. On top of that, there would be whole paragraphs (sometimes spoken by a character) that added absolutely no value to the story. Prime example: when the storm is getting ready to hit around 84%, there is a paragraph about how farmers dealt with powerful storms many years ago. THERE IS NOT A SINGLE FARM OR FARMER IN THIS BOOK! WHO CARES? There's only character development for Anderson, but barely any for Ted and none for anyone else. All of the characters were boring, and even with the insta-lust and insta-love, I didn't feel any of it. The sex wasn't hot and I felt no emotions.I wanted to drop this book so many times, but I'm trying to do better about finishing books. This book was terribly dull up until about 65%, then all of a sudden the whole thing turns into a soap opera/Lifetime movie. Honestly, from 70% forward is what saved this from being a 1.5 star review. Doesn't mean I'll actively be seeking this author out in the future, though. Once again, saved by Kindle Unlimited.
