From the Inside Flap
Toddlers can drive you bonkers...so adorable and fun one minute...so stubborn and demanding the next! Yet, as unbelievable as it sounds, there is a way to turn the daily stream of "nos" and "don'ts" into "yeses" and hugs...if you know how to speak your toddler's language. In one of the most useful advances in parenting techniques of the past twenty-five years, Dr. Karp reveals that toddlers, with their immature brains and stormy outbursts, should be thought of not as pint-size people but as pintsize...cavemen. Having noticed that the usual techniques often failed to calm crying toddlers, Dr. Karp discovered that the key to effective communication was to speak to them in their own primitive language. When he did, suddenly he was able to soothe their outbursts almost every time! This amazing success led him to the realization that children between the ages of one and four go through four stages of "evolutionary" growth, each linked to the development of the brain, and each echoing a step in prehistoric humankind's journey to civilization: - The "Charming Chimp-Child" (12 to 18 months): Wobbles around on two legs, grabs everything in reach, plays a nonstop game of "monkey see monkey do."- The "Knee-High Neanderthal" (18 to 24 months): Strong-willed, fun-loving, messy, with a vocabulary of about thirty words, the favorites being "no" and "mine."- The "Clever Caveman" (24 to 36 months): Just beginning to learn how to share, make friends, take turns, and use the potty.- The "Versatile Villager" (36 to 48 months): Loves to tell stories, sing songs and dance, while trying hard to behave. To speak to these children, Dr. Karp has developed two extraordinarily effective techniques: 1) The "fastfood" rule -- restating what your child has said to make sure you got it right; 2) The four-step rule -- using gesture, repetition, simplicity, and tone to help your irate Stone-Ager be happy again.Once you've mastered "toddler-ese," you will be ready to apply behavioral techniques specific to each stage of your child's development, such as teaching patience and calm, doing time-outs (and time-ins), praise through "gossiping," and many other strategies. Then all the major challenges of the toddler years -- including separation anxiety, sibling rivalry, toilet training, night fears, sleep problems, picky eating, biting and hitting, medicine taking -- can be handled in a way that will make your toddler feel understood. The result: fewer tantrums, less yelling, and, best of all, more happy, loving time for you and your child.

It actually does help to read a parenting book. My child is four, and I’ve read five parenting books over the past six months to try to find out what I can do different to correct the behavior that got him kicked out of pre-school. I was actually starting to get discouraged about children’s books in general, because while they did offer one or two things that were helpful for me to try, they still didn’t seem worth their while. But this book is really different. The first thing I liked about this book is that it’s written by a guy who actually knows kids, and by that I mean every single type of kid. He was the first one to “hit the nail on the head†so to speak, because he literally has seen it all.Secondly, he doesn’t make you feel bad about yourself or your kid. That may be a weird thing to point out, but I’ve read parenting books that took me weeks to get through because they either made me feel bad, or made me feel like something was wrong with me kid (and that I should feel sorry for him.) But this book doesn’t do that.Thirdly, the author is straight to the point. He does give scenarios of what happened with children he knows, but he doesn’t go into so much detail that you can’t figure out what he’s saying quickly. It feels like some authors only have a few good things to say so they harp on those few things several times or they stretch it out so that their book can be called a “bookâ€. But this book was very concise and straight to the point. I never felt like I was wasting my time reading this book, because every time I sat down to read more than fifteen minutes of it, I learned at least two very helpful things to try with my child to improve his behavior. And fourth, this book actually works. It really does teach you to be “that parent†that is so good with kids that even other people’s kids will be drawn to you at places like the zoo or the park. And after you’ve tried these methods for a short time, it will seem that this “parent greatness†that you have just comes to you naturally. I think it’s because somewhere inside of us we have an instinct of how we should be teaching our kids but we get so caught up on what TV says we should do, what we see our friends with kids do, or what our parents did to us, that we find ourselves forgetting or ignoring the most natural way to parent. And this book brings it back out again.I know I said a lot just to say this: I recommend this book to parents of every child type and of any age.
I read happiest baby on the block and found that book extremely useful for my newborn so I had to try the toddler book as well. It’s an easy read and actually great to keep on hand when you need to refer to it. It also spans from 1 yr to the end of year 3 so you don’t have to read it in it’s entirety right away. What I like best is the explanation in the beginning about how to perceive our toddlers and correctly put our expectations in place. It made a great segway to understanding my little one much better and how to use the disciplinary tactics in the book.Last thing! I appreciate that the book is so easily broken down into segments and practical exercises to try on your kids. It makes the book less daunting to read and more feasible to finish as a busy parent of a toddler.
My son is 28 months old. In the past two months, he started to throw a lot more tantrums. The situation became very stressful for me and my wife. Out of desperation, I read this book.Boy do I feel ashamed of myself. I have been doing it wrong, and I must have hurt the feelings and dignity of the little guy. I wish I read this book earlier.Filled with very practical techniques, and very enjoyable to read, I would recommend this book to every parent. One of the best parenting books I’ve read so far.
As I'm reading this book, it really makes a lot of sense in the psyche of a toddler and the beat approaches. So far the approaches that I have used without even finishing the book have in fact worked. I will give a detailed update once I finish and apply the tips and advice given.
Dr. Karp is a life saver. We've been using this book since our little one was 2 years old and have continued to build on the principles.
Harvey Karp does it again! I have read his Happiest Baby book, as well as his Happiest Baby sleep book, and they are both full of wise and useful information. The toddler book is great, and has so many discipline strategies and ideas that work, and that I never would have thought of on my own. He really teaches you how to respect your toddler, yet to be firm and consistent. The strategies have worked well for me-nothing is 100% all the time, but I promise you that this book is worth more than you paid for it. It really puts a toddler's mind and behavior into perspective. Buy it!
Hilarious read about our cavemen children and how to communicate with them effectively/how to understand where they are since so many of us have forgotten how to be kids or understand the spirited ones.
I bought this for my 2 year old and there were definitely less tantrums once she realized I was on her side and understood her more she felt 'heard' and didn't continue with her anger rant. Great for the children 2-4. This does take patience on the parent's party but if you're willing to do the work I think you'll find it worthwhile.
