Robert M. Bob Marovich is a gospel music historian, author, and radio host. Gospel Memories, a radio program of classic gospel, spiritual, and jubilee music, airs on Chicagos WLUW-FM and throughout the week on Internet, low-power FM, and terrestrial radio stations. The radio program received a commendation from the African American Museum of Philadelphia and in 2017 earned Bob a Gospel Image Award. It was named Best Gospel Radio Show of the Year by the Rhythm of Gospel Awards in 2018.Bob writes about classic and contemporary gospel music as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Gospel Music (www.journalofgospelmusic.com). The website, formerly known as The Black Gospel Blog, was nominated for a Rhythm of Gospel Award in 2013 and 2018.In 2016, Bob became host of Conversations with the Gospel Legends, a 30-minute video series featuring discussions with prominent Chicago gospel legends, for the PCC Broadcast Network. He appears in the documentary How We Got Over (One State Films) and has been interviewed for several other documentaries in production.Bobs work has been published in the Encyclopedia of American Gospel Music (Routledge 2005), Encyclopedia of African American Music (Greenwood Publishing 2010), and in the ARSC Journal of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections. His article on Chicago choirmaster Professor J. Wesley Jones was published in Chicago History in 2017. It received a 2016 Certificate of Merit in Historical Sound Recorded Research from the Association for Recorded Sound Collections. It was named one of the best nonfiction books of 2015 by the Chicago Book Review.Bob graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame in 1985 and earned an MBA from the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management in 2002. I’m surprised that I’m the first one to post a review of this product, but maybe it’ll guide others to pick it up.I called the “set” a conundrum because it’s like the old parable “the blind men and the elephant” because it can be different things to different people, depending on how they define things. Is this a book (140 pages, weighting nearly four pounds, and profusely illustrated) with eight (that’s right, EIGHT) Cd’s slipped in the back two pages? Or is this an 8-disc CD set with lots (and lots!) of liner notes? It’s referred to in the text (and the publisher as well) as “box set”. But is it? There is no box for it to come in. It’s sure bound like a coffee table book.And what about the subtitle: “Celebrating 75 Years of Gospel Music”? It’s about the Malaco label, but that was founded in 1968 in Mississippi (by white Tuscumbia, Alabama native Tommy Couch Sr. ) so it’s just 50 years old. The answer is that Couch started his label to record and release R&B and jazz records, the biggest was “Mr. Big Stuff” by Jean Knight. It was not until 1986, when Couch purchased the catalog of the Apollo Records label (virtually all gospel records) and later the (gospel portion of) the Savoy label, that Malaco became the largest warehouse of black gospel music.The first disc here includes (among its 18 tracks) the most recognizable names to those like me – a white guy – who loves gospel harmony singing and foot-stomping rhythms. We have one of the first million sellers for Apollo, the 1947 “Move On Up A Little Higher” by Mahalia Jackson (one of the two Jackson sides on this disc). The Ward Singers (with Clara) have three sides here and then there is one from 1959 by the Original Blind Boys of Alabama. Halfway into disc Two we beginning to hear the recordings made specifically for Malaco and the most recent track (on disc 8, track 12) is from 2013 – “Keep Knocking” by The Canton Spirituals.Okay, now for the text. Gospel music authority – and radio personality – Robert (most folks call him “Bob”) Marovich was engaged by the current label owner Tommy Crouch Jr. to write the text which fills much of the book and weaves a history of the lable and it’s acquisitions with notes on EVERY one of the 100 (yep!) tracks on the CDs. There are many (mostly color) images of the artists as well as record labels and album covers.The knowledge that Marovich shares is well written and the print is large enough to read easily. Og course you may find yourself reading the book at a table. Holding a 12x12 book weighing in at four pounds is not easy.There are a few gripes I have with the layout person and editor though. Not enough to give this set less than a FIVE STAR rating. I just want you to be aware of them. The most annoying for most folks is that there are track lists for each CD. It’s just that they not in the back where the CDs are packed. They aren’t even in the front of the book. For some odd reason the pages showing the track list and info are scattered throughout the book. Disc One is on page 17, Disc Two is on page 37, Disc Three is on page 48, and on to page 101 where you will find Disc Eight.While, as I said, the font is easy to read, the formatting is inconsistent. Song titles are, rightly, shown with quotation marks, but album titles are not italicized (as they should be), at least not until page 20 or so.Another omission – an important one in my opinion – was the lack of credit for the sound restoration and transfers. I looked hard and couldn’t find them. An email to the author revealed that (in Tommy Sr.’s words “"It was a joint effort. Wolf (Stephenson) did most of the restoration work while Kent Bruce did the mastering and assembly work.”. The sound, by the way is great!Malaco, the label, is the publisher of this whole package and considering that the large, heavy and colorful book with EIGHT CDs, is priced on Amazon at just over $40.00 that means that each CD is just five bucks and the book is thrown in for free. Or maybe the coffee table book is $41.00 and you get the EIGHT CDs fee. As I said at the beginning, it’s all in how you look at it. But, in all cases this is something anyone interest in the musical joys of gospel music will want to own. And both Malaco (which set the price point) and Marovich – who shared his expertise – deserve it for making it special (and affordable!)By the way, though it is not on home video yet, I HIGHLY recommend the wonderful new gospel music documentary from Jerry Zolten "How I Got Over?"
