I struggle with this book. My 3 year old daughter has separation anxiety and I wanted to find a book that would help ease that. This wasn’t it. The penguin character and the drawings are adorable, but it didn’t send the positive message I was hoping for. Mom leaves Little Penguin with a babysitter and the babysitter entertains the penguin,but in every picture except the last one where he’s snacking, the little penguin is sad or in tears. I was hoping the penguin would illustrate a joyfulness in being with the babysitter, showing my daughter, “you’ll have so much fun with the babysitter that you won’t even know I’m gone†but my daughter even noted that the penguin looked sad and the point she picked up on most was the phrase “missing Mom.â€
This is an epic tale of a young soul's emotional journey from despair to elation. A little penguin's parent leaves for parts unknown, a caretaker endeavors to console the emotionally compromised penguin. Toys. Food. Books....A tale no parent/kid should be without.
The Michael Dahl collection of books are always a top choice for my 2 year old. I feel like he can relate to Penguin, especially in the book Penguin misses mom. Ms. Duck plays with him until mommy comes to pick him up, and we even wave and say bye to mommy together.

Penguin Misses Mom is a sweet book about missing a parent. Little Penguin's mom has to go and leaves Little Penguin in the capable hands of Mrs. Duck, who is amusingly depicted in a Mary Poppins-like hat and scarf. I liked the way the babysitter acknowledges and accepts Penguin's feelings before distracting him with books and blocks to pass the time until Mom returns. Short text and colorful illustrations carefully address this important social and emotional issue that toddlers deal with on a daily basis.
We read it before he stays at Grandmas. It seems to help some of his separation anxiety.
