This book was recommended to me by a truly trusted friend who knows her books. Thanks, Jenny.The Gift of Ghosts, well that might be a gift for some, but, in Akira Malone's case, she would rather her 'gift' be considered a 'Quirk.' Now I capitalized the Q as in Akira's case she has had multiple encounters with ghosts that have a red aura and are vicious in their interaction with her. That is not to say some ghosts are charming, but...At what cost? Akira quickly encounters her first ghost, Dillon. Dillon was a 15yr old and is 'tied' to the rental car provided for her at the airport. Akira tries to ignore him, but...he is to personable and endears himself to her. What is this job offer really about? But, as we know...Akira having been unwise in an academic paper needs a job. One offer comes literally out of the blue. There is a firm in Florida, in a wee town named Tassamara, that beckons her. After the strangest interview of, I think anyone's life, she is offered a non-disclosure and employment form and is hired at 25% more than she previously made...but...Zane is sent to interview Akira upon his Father's request and knows nothing about her really. When Akira arrives, Zane is confused. They have never hired a Physics Professor before? Fate steps in and he offers her employment, as I said prior.This employment is a job that I wish, hope, does exist somewhere or sometime, however it is a wonderful storyline that swings the reader through the halls of physics, science, medical wonders, and Quantum Physics...looking for Ghosts! There is also the added attraction of the romance between Akira and Zane.It sounds as though I have told you the entire story, but, oh no...I haven't. There are twists and turns all throughout the book. This is one mystery for the mind.
One little comment in an article she wrote, and her whole career is ruined. Being a physicist and working on her research was the most important thing to Akira with the exception of hiding the fact that she can see and talk with ghosts. When the article threatens her job, she decides to accept an interview with a company in Florida. When she is interviewed for the job, she is unclear what exactly the company does and what they would want her to do. Zane is surprised by Akira and drawn to her at the same time. General Directions, Inc. has many special projects involving psychic gifts and Zane is hoping that Akira will be able to join the ranks and help his family talk with those they’ve lost.This was a delightful story, full of some of my favorite things; psychics, ghosts and a good romance. The setting of the story, a little town in Florida knows as Tassamara sounded so quaint and peaceful, painting a lovely background for the story. I look forward to checking out the next book in the series by Wynde.
At first I had a bit of trouble getting into the book. For me that is usually a sign that the book is going to be terrible or great. This one is great!The slow lead in is to give the reader enough time to really appreciate the complexity of the problems facing the main character and her consternation at the ease with which everyone she came in contact overlooked her peculiar trait.The character drawing is among the best I have read in a long time. The plot development is fantastic. When I was returned to Zane' s house in my reading, I thought I was just going to read for a bit and then go to bed. I couldn't put the book down and wound up staying up until 3am to read to the end it was that dynamic.This is not a ghost story. It is a story about ghosts and an unusual woman and community. It is well worth reading. It gives the reader much food for thought on the topic. I enjoyed it immensely.
While I enjoyed this story because it was something different from what I usually read, I couldn't but notice the author had some grammatical issues. Whether it was including a word that shouldn't be there, leaving a word out, or writing a sentence that came out as an incomplete thought. An example of an issue: "Grace AND Nat AND Max AND Zane..." Don't be scared of the comma.Something that really was questionable was the fact that I didn't realize/know the main character, Akira, was part Japanese. I read this on my tablet and it wasn't until I got to 75% that I realized that fact. Well someone could say, what about her name? That should have been enough to know what nationality she was. Unfortunately, no. There are white people with uncommon names. Therefore, since the author didn't bother stating she wasn't white, only describing her long, dark, curly hair, what is a reader supposed to do? Or that Henry was black until the very end of the story when Akira asks him about his relationship with Rose.Questions/Comments:There is a difference between lipstick and lip gloss. Not sure why the author used both terms when referring to the same thing.I don't understand how Akira ended up in the car accident. She knew that Dillon was 'a part of the car,' yet she still tried to drive away. Anyways, she had just started driving, slammed on the breaks and skidded? How did she skid? There was no mention of it raining or having rained.Given how secretive/hesitant/timid Akira is, I was surprised how easy it seemed for her to seduce Zane...have sex with him...her boss...while at work.Akira thinking negative thoughts when she went with Zane to North Carolina...well that just annoyed me. He'd already stated that he didn't know what he was going there for. He told her that she didn't have to come with him (hence no ulterior motive), yet: "The stab of pain was almost physical; the betrayal a bitter taste in her mouth."When Henry describes what it looked/felt like entering the door to the other side, Akira wonders how a seashell could be misty? Why? Henry never said it looked like a seashell, but the color of a seashell.Rose died in 1957 at nineteen. Henry died around 60-70's. So if he'd been waiting for Rose (trying to find her after he died), he hadn't been dead that long. So why was he fading already when Rose was still solid?I don't understand how Akira actually loved her father? He was against the fact she could see ghosts, thinking instead that she was crazy or something and would beat her when a ghost would try to possess her. How did she not hold resentment towards him? I was waiting for the author to have included him in the story as a ghost.The end was somewhat strange. Henry and Rose decided to stay. Yet, Akira never saw Henry. Rose repeatedly said that he was around; so what was going on there?
