I was traveling through Laos and thought this guidebook was pretty spot on especially with the "warning" about being met at the docks by guesthouse people when you get off the boat :) The guidebook is layed out nicely and I had no problem using the maps and the places where I dined were listed in the book. I personally would like to recommend the guesthouse I stayed at in Luang Prabang (not listed) it was amazing maybe they'll put it in their next addition. I was traveling for a month through Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. I had problems with the Thailand book (see that review) so I was wary about using this book in Laos but my fears were put aside. There is good advice, accuratacy about encounters (which were positive for me) and good descriptions about the places I saw, roads etc. This is a good and reliable guidebook.
Laos is not a heavely traveled place but these folks at Lonely Planet as always provide a very good travel companion.When they tell you something you can take it to the Bank, it is correct. I was one of the first tourist into Cambodia after the war and thest guys at Lonely Planet were ahead of me giving good helpful advice. Walk in Book Stores often are out of a perticular "Lonely Planet" guide but I can always count on Amazon having the most current issue in their "In House" stock, and a prompt shipment. L
Lonely Planet books are the best travel books around. I like the history mixed with the travel/tourist info. This one is no exception!
Seems like a good book for Laos, unfortunately it doesn't have too much info on the cities we are going to.
I typically get the Lonely Planet books whenever I travel and the Laos book was no different. I really appreciated how Lonely Planet included a lot about the history of the country and the recommendations to visit. The maps are well done and on par.
The receiver of the book and I both love the lonely planet series travel books. They're very informative and never a bad purchase!

i do lots of international motorcycle touring.when planning a trip i always buy a few guide books and read them cover to cover.so i purchased this one.Laos is a "off the beaten path" destination so i was not expecting gobbs of detailed information on the hard-to-get-to areas of the country. (what im looking for).one of the authors is a motorcyclist . he did a good job writing the Cambodia Lonely planet book but in this one he really didnt have anything interesting .. i.e. "hardcore" to offer.however there is a lot of good info in this book and should be considereda good starting point.worth adding to the collection.-swamp advrider.com
